An Apimaye 10 frame bee hive holds the same number of frames as a standard 10F Langstroth, but the walls are insulated polypropylene rather than timber. Apimaye quotes an R value of 6.93 for these hives, more than six times the heat insulation of a wooden box, so the colony works less to hold its brood temperature. Each brood comes with a vented bottom board, pollen trap, two top feeders, an entrance closure and stainless lock and latch handles. Its removable bottom tray catches varroa, small hive beetle and wax moth when coated with canola oil or used with a sticky board.
Depth is the main decision. Full-depth broods and supers take full-depth Langstroth frames, while a Manley super is 170mm tall, 72mm shorter, and uses Manley frames. Filled with honey, a Manley super weighs roughly 10kg less than a full-depth one, which is why many beekeepers run a full-depth 10 frame brood box with Manley supers above it. Frames are extra on the boxes: choose Apimaye Handy Frames, Beemax plastic or wood frames on the frame-option listings, or order a complete brood-and-super set-up.
