A nuc box is the small hive every beekeeper ends up needing, whether you're making a split, raising a new queen, catching a swarm or moving a few frames of bees to another site. A full-depth nuc takes the same frames as a full-depth brood box, so a young colony can be lifted straight across once it outgrows the nuc.
Choosing a bee nuc box comes down to two questions. First, 4 or 5 frames: a 4-frame nuc suits a small split or a mating queen, while a 5 frame nuc box gives a building colony more room before it moves up. Second, how much assembly you want: budget kits are dovetail pine you put together yourself, wax-dipped kits come with the base and metal cover already assembled, and the assembled wax-dipped versions are ready to go to work. Timber also outlasts polystyrene nucs, which bees chew and ants, mice and wax moth attack, and it won't leak like corflute. For an insulated option, the Apimaye 7-frame can run as one nuc or be divided into two 3-frame nucs.
