The Grafting Tool is used in Queen rearing to remove larvae from cells. This tool has a flexible head & tongue that easily slides under the larvae and royal jelly to scoop it out of the cell. It is spring loaded to delicately remove the larvae and place it safely into the cell cup. A non-slip grip in the middle section gives you excellent control.

Immobiliser for Queen Marking

• To use, locate your queen and gently press the cage into the brood, ensuring you do not harm the Queen.
• Push the cage further into the frame to secure the Queen, allowing you to mark HRH.
• You can use a pen, paint, or coloured discs for marking, with the colour indicating the year the Queen was born.
• If you use paint or a pen, lift the cage slightly to allow her to move but not escape, giving the marking time to dry.
• Once you are satisfied with the marking, completely lift the cage and release HRH.

WHY MARK YOUR QUEEN?

So you can see if she has swarmed or been superseded

This sounds counterintuitive – how would you be able to find the coloured spot if the queen has swarmed or been replaced? Well, you can’t. But knowing that the queen in the hive IS marked, you will know that any unmarked queen found in the hive is not the queen you had there originally. This is helpful particularly at times when you haven’t managed to get to the bees in a while and they could have swarmed and requeened or even superseded in between inspections.

So when she swarms into a bush, you know which hive she came from!

Perhaps combined with using numbers and as long as you have kept good records about which queen is in what hive, this prevents you from having to go through all your colonies to determine where the most recent swarm has come from. You should be able to spot a marked queen fairly easily in a swarm as there are fewer bees and no combs to hide round the back of.

For breeding

For beekeepers rearing queens of specific strains, using colours as well as numbers can help to keep track of breeding lines.

Swarm Boss Premium Bee Lure is a scientifically based formulation containing various terpenoids and other organic compounds, which accurately mimic Nasonov pheromone.

Set Swarm Traps as follows:

• Select a clean used 8-frame or 10-frame brood box with a non-vented / solid base.  The trap needs to be ca 40L – Nuc boxes are too small. 
• Apply 2 single sprays of Beewise Swarm Boss to the underside of the cover; and 2 single sprays of Beewise Swarm Boss on the base adjacent to the entrance.  Don’t over-do the sprays as more is not better.
• Insert new frames with wax foundation.  If you use developed honey comb you are likely to attract wax moths.
• Reduce entrance to about 10cm.
• Place box at a location conspicuous to the bees at height of about 2 metres.
• Lift the rear of the hive 1cm to ensure no water ingress.
• Sniff the Swam Trap every 2 weeks and if Beewise Swarm Boss cannot be detected by nose, reapply as above.
