Honeycomb jars are filled on the hive rather than in the shed: the bees draw comb inside each empty jar, store honey in it and cap the cells, so the jar leaves the apiary with natural comb already sealed inside. For beekeepers selling at markets or the farm gate, a honey comb jar is a premium line that stands apart from plain extracted honey.
Two systems are listed here, and the jar you plan to use decides between them. Our Lanogard-treated jar templates come in 8F and 10F widths, each holding 15 hexagonal 500g jars, so match the template to your box width. The Apimaye comb honey jar adapter is made for 10-frame hives, fits both Apimaye insulated and timber Langstroth boxes, and takes 12 regular or wide-mouth mason jars. Each opening has a queen excluder built in, keeping the queen out while workers fill the jars. Jars are not included with either system.
Either way, the jars sit on top of the hive with an empty super and lid over them, so check you have a spare from our beehive boxes and supers. Hex 500g glass jars are in our honey jars and containers range, ready to top up with your own honey once the honeycomb jars come off.
