A pollen trap makes returning foragers squeeze through a screen at the hive entrance, which brushes pellets off their legs and drops them into a drawer or tray. For sideliners running palletised hives, our bottom-mounted 8-frame and 10-frame traps sit below the brood chamber and collect into a protected rear drawer. The front-entrance trap is the budget option for amateur beekeepers, fixed to standard 8 and 10 frame gear with screws or an occy strap, while the stainless FlexiLoop trap uses elastic wire loops designed to reduce damage to bee legs and wings and comes with a weather cover.
Whichever bee pollen trap you choose, don't leave it working every day. The colony needs pollen for its own brood, so close the trap entrance for three to four days each week, or set the FlexiLoop to open. Apimaye 10F owners can fit a pollen trap insert and matching tray, and the tray also fits the Type G base found among our beehive bottom boards.
For propolis, a flexible silicone propolis trap replaces the inner cover and the bees fill its grooves. Freeze it in a bag overnight, then flex or bang it to release clean propolis. The 10F multi-purpose mat works the same way on timber and Apimaye hives, alongside our crown boards and hive mats. Dry and clean trapped pollen with our pollen drying and cleaning equipment.
The 10-Frame Apimaye Propolis Trap is an excellent way to harvest clean propolis from your Apimaye hive and add extra income. Replace your inner cover with our plastic propolis trap. The bees will fill the grooves of the trap with propolis.
To remove simply put the trap inside a plastic bag and freeze overnight. Being made of silicone they an be rolled up to fit into your freezer. Once frozen, twist or bang the trap inside the bag against a flat surface to release the propolis.
The Apimaye Propolis Trap is made from quality food-grade silicone (just like kitchen cup cake moulds), which make them superior to mats made of poylethylene (PE) or polypropylene PP), so they will not become brittle with age and easily hold their shape for many years.
