Whether you're recoating plastic foundation, mixing a rosin wax blend for food wraps or hot dipping hive boxes, the job decides which wax you need. Our beeswax is pure 100% West Australian wax that has had no contact with small hive beetle, varroa or pesticides, sold as a wax block in 250g, 500g and 2.5kg sizes. Melt it to coat plastic foundation sheets, or pour it into candles and food wraps.
Pine rosin is a brittle, yellowish-brown resin from conifers, sold here in a 200g pack. Stirred into melted beeswax, it makes the mixture more elastic, a handy property when a wrap has to fold around a bowl without cracking. That is the whole idea behind rosin wax: beeswax for the coating, rosin for the flex.
A simple rule for choosing: anything bees will build on, or that touches food, gets pure beeswax. Paraffin and microcrystalline wax are for woodware instead. A 50:50 blend of the two goes into a dipping tank to seal timber boxes against moisture and rot, with paraffin in 5kg and 25kg lots and microcrystalline in 4.5kg or 27kg from Japan. - A hot-wax dipped wood hive can be expected to last 20 years and more by preventing the ingress of moisture which facilitates wood rot.
Woodware is submerged for 10 minutes in molten wax at temperature between 130degC and 165degC. - A 200L wax dipping tank would require about 150kg of wax.
- 1 kg of the wax is likely to be sufficient to treat 4-5 boxes.
IMPORTANT: Control temperatures carefully as overheating may result in a spontaneous wax fire.
