A white beam at a hive entrance after dark draws bees straight back to whoever holds the torch, which is why bee lights for night work use red LEDs. Bees can't see red, so a red light for bees lets you close up entrances, check a hive or load a truck at dawn or dusk without guards homing in on your face. On both our red lights the colour comes from the LEDs, not a filter over a white globe.
