Our unassembled bee boxes arrive as flat-pack kits of seasoned New Zealand pine, 21 to 22mm thick and machined accurately so the finished box sits square on the stack without rocking. Each bee box kit has four hand grips and makes up as either a brood box or a honey super, in full depth, WSP or Manley and in 8F and 10F widths.
The main choice among our unassembled bee boxes is the corner joint. Most kits here are rebate boxes, where one board sits into a step cut along the end of the other, a plain and sturdy design. Finger joint and dovetail kits, both full depth, interlock along each corner for more gluing surface, and the premium finger joint kits come pre-drilled to save time at the bench. Whatever the joint, buy the width your hives already run, because 8F and 10F parts don't mix.
Bare pine needs protecting before it goes out to the apiary, so once the unassembled box is built, seal it with Lanogard, paint it or hot-wax dip it, using our beehive timber treatment range. One 10F full depth rebate kit is supplied already wax dipped. Then fit it out with beehive frames in the same depth. Short on time for the build? Our assembled and painted bee boxes are ready for the hive.
