A crown board sits on the top bars of the upper box, under the lid, giving the colony a ceiling of its own so the bees are less inclined to build comb in the cover. Crown boards and hive mats here are cut for 8F or 10F boxes, so first match the width of your top box.
Then choose mat or board. A hive mat is a flat sheet, 46 x 28cm for 8F and 46 x 33cm for 10F, leaving a margin around the edge for ventilation, and it peels back for a quick, tidy look at the frames. A crown board is a rigid inner cover with a central opening, and both styles are designed with Flow Hives in mind. The round-hole boards also pair with our Rapid top feeders, while the low-profile oblong-hole boards take crown board mesh. A perforated galvanised vent plate fits all four boards, letting air through without letting bees into the lid.
Separate 8F and 10F mats are made for use with top feeders and other bee feeders. The flexible silicone 10F multi-purpose mat suits timber and Apimaye hives as a ventilated mat, propolis trap or division mat when uniting two colonies, and a heavy canvas manipulation cloth folds back two frames at a time to keep bees calmer during inspections. Finish the stack with one of our beehive covers and lids.
